In a career spanning a decade and a half, David Rice has established a reputation for adventurous, soulful music with four critically acclaimed solo albums and an ever-expanding range of works in artist production and original score for film, television, branded content, and commercials. Tastemaker Boston Phoenix called his 1998 Columbia Records release greenelectric the “smart-pop album of the year,” Billboard praised his “poignancy,” Variety singled out his music in its review of the 2008 feature documentary Crawford, and All Music has characterized him as a “smart, witty, sensitive urban poet.” His collaborations with Mandy Moore have earned him two platinum records as writer/producer plus a commission to write and perform with her a 9/11 memorial piece at TNT’s Christmas In Washington 2001.

David’s haunting guitar work was the signature of the five-years-running Wachovia Bank Uncommon Wisdom campaign and he has composed, produced, and/or performed music in dozens of national ads for Ford, Southwest Airlines, Hyundai, Coca-Cola, Folgers, Honda, Southwest Airlines, US Air Force, and BMW. He co-wrote the themes to ABC’s hit sitcom Hope and Faith and PBS’ Endless Feast, and he has created original music for TV shows and films including Matchstick Men, Party of Five, and Roswell. He composed the score to David Modigliani’s internationally acclaimed feature documentary Crawford, and for three years running has scored the annual See Change documentary series for the Clinton Global Initiative. His recent soundtrack to Turk Pipkin’s documentary One Peace at a Time (winner of the 2009 Maui Film Festival Audience Award) sets a sense of place with traditional and modern instruments as the filmmaker travels the globe looking for solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. David works and lives in Austin with his wife Lisa and their son Judah. He is a principal with CSR/Cause Marketing creative agency/production company Flow Nonfiction and a partner in Rice Brand Media. He was recently honored as the co-writer and singer of title track to the 2010 Grammy- nominated contemporary jazz album At Worldʼs Edge from Philippe Saisse.

Writer/Director/Actor Turk Pipkin’s One Peace at a Time makes its world premiere April 14 to a sold-out Paramount Theater. I created the film’s original score using an assortment of ethnic and western sounds (including sitar, tabla, marimba, kalimba, and piano) that set a sense of place as Turk travels the globe looking for solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.  http://nobelity.org

David teams up with America Scores and ASCAP to write Nothing That We Can’t Do with 3rd graders at Obadiah Knight Elementary in Dallas. As part of ASCAP/America Scores new national songwriting mentorship program, I traveled to Dallas in late November to host three sessions with 12 boys from the inner-city school. MaxiMedia studio graciously invited us in to record the kids’ vocals, and I finished up the track back at the studio in Austin with the help of drummer Ramy Antoun. Have a listen/look at the new video!

From his studio in Austin, David Rice composes and produces original score for documentary and narrative film, television, branded content, and commercials. He offers artist production and development, guitar and keyboard overdubs, vocal arrangement and production, recording, and mixing. Please contact to explore working together.
